Today, we are recognising the effort our industry is placing on Changing the Narrative on Suicide, which is the theme for World Suicide Prevention Day, recognised on 10 September.
As an industry, we have recognised that change is sorely needed. Male workers in the Australian building and construction industry die by suicide at 1.7 times the rate of male workers in other industries, while a 2022 study showed that nearly one-third of apprentices surveyed reported suicidal ideation in the previous year, and more than half knew someone who had either attempted or died by suicide.
These figures are at the core of why we have initiated the Bluehats program, as real change can only come when we change systems, not just individuals.
This World Suicide Prevention Day, the theme calls on us all to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma, and foster open, compassionate conversations about suicide. It is about shifting from silence and misunderstanding to openness, empathy, and support, creating environments where people feel able to speak up and seek help.
We applaud the work of all our committed Bluehats who are working to change the narrative on suicide within our industry.
