Trades Fit Expo: Inspiring the next generation of Women in Construction
Posted on July 13, 2023
In May the Department of Education’s Trades Fit Expo was back for a second year, this time with more students, exhibitors and speakers.
Over two days, thousands of female and non-binary students came to learn what a career in construction could look like for them.
We partnered with Hutchinson Builders and the CFMEU to give students an interactive experience.
Students were able to put on a VR (Virtual reality) headset and take a tour of a construction site.
Our photobooth for the students provided a fun activity where they could dress up like construction workers.
Crane Traineeship Graduate Jane took them through a Crane simulation and told them what it was like to drive a crane.
We get lots of questions about how girls get into this industry, and we've been able to help them. We've been able to answer all their questions and hopefully make a pathway for them into the crane industry.
It was great to see the students and their teachers engaged in the interactive experiences on offer.
Over the two days we were able to talk to students about the different pathways available and what our industry has to offer.
Speaking about the expo Rose from the VMCTA said “It's been wonderful seeing people actually in the industry here at the expo to have those conversations with young people”.
