A temporary change is coming to termination reasons

We want to let you know about a temporary update to the list of termination reasons your employer can select when ending your employment.

This change is being made so we can continue to comply with the ATO’s revised interpretation of relevant tax laws. To support this, we need to make changes to our operations that will allow for an updated worker account structure.

We are making this change now to help protect you from any potential tax issues. It's a short-term fix while we work on a long-term solution.

As an interim measure, from 14 July 2025, your employer will only be able to select from the following termination reasons:

  • Genuine Redundancy
  • Terminated
  • Terminated through shortage of work
  • Deceased
  • Invalidity

This means that the ability to claim for resignation and retirement before preservation age will be disabled from July 14 until a new worker account structure is in place. This will not impact claims entered prior to this date.

Genuine redundancy claims can continue to be made (up to the applicable tax-free threshold).

These changes are part of our new member offer which includes doubling investment in industry wellbeing programs and dividends for active worker members.

Your union can also help answer any questions you have regarding appropriate termination reasons.

Please note that these changes will have no impact on your ability to claim a distribution later this year.
