Flinders Street Station gets a facelift

As part of the Victorian Government’s $100 million program to repair Melbourne’s iconic Flinders Street Station, Built has been contracted to refurbish the Station’s heritage-listed administration building.

More than 100 years old, the building requires urgent restoration and maintenance to conserve its heritage elements for future generations. Built is undertaking works to ensure the structural stability of the building, repair the ageing facade and allow for future stages and full redevelopment.

With 80-100 workers onsite, the works include replacing and resealing the new roof, repairing the parapets, inclusive of internal seismic stabilisation, and restoring the clock tower.

The program will bring the building’s exterior back to its original state as since completion in 1910, the Station has been painted six times. Built will fully repair and repaint the facade to the original stone colour consistent with Heritage Victoria requirements.

The challenge with these extensive works has been meeting the appropriate code requirements for the seismic stabilisation design to the Ballroom and Gymnasium as well as satisfying Heritage Victoria aesthetic and condition requirements. This has been complicated with the additional restrictions of location; rail to the South and main transport thoroughfare to the North and East.

From design development through to construction, the ability to translate complex designs while maintaining the integrity of a heritage listed building was important throughout. Scheduled to complete in mid-2018, Built is working closely with Development Victoria and its associated consultants to restore this iconic building back to its former glory.
