CFMEU: Industry and Quality are First

Posted on Nov 21, 2017

Just as our Education and Training Unit is focused on quality and the serious issues facing our industry, the union as a whole works every day to ensure work is conducted safely and workers receive their proper share of the wealth they generate.

CFMEU right there supporting Hazelwood workers

With the closure in March this year of the Hazelwood power station after 50 years’ generating electricity for the Victorian community, the CFMEU is playing its part in supporting workers who have lost their jobs.

Some workers have taken advantage of the Victorian Government’s initiative of bringing parties together to find a way of keeping people working in the industry and in their communities. Some have accepted redundancy and others are having training to move into new industries and even new communities.

The Hazelwood workers were keen for more training and CFMEU Training is quality training that keeps up with the latest technology and standards. The CFMEU Education and Training Unit recently held construction induction card training for 20 Hazelwood workers and Work Safely at Heights training for 15 students in Morwell.

Latest CFMEU Training

The latest addition to the CFMEU Training facility is a perimeter safety screen, supplied by Omniform. The screen will be used in courses including refresher training for riggers and our High Risk Work Licence courses as part of Basic Rigging. Second year CFMEU apprentices helped complete the platform deck prior to the screen being installed at our High Risk Training Centre in Port Melbourne.

CFMEU Apprentices – the Dream Team

Meanwhile, we congratulate the first team of CFMEU pre-apprentices who are now second-year apprentice carpenters. They’ve constructed eaves, erected scaffold, pitched the roof and installed fascias and eave sheets and we think they are the best in the industry.
