Suicide Prevention

Incolink’s Bluehats Suicide Prevention Program is a gatekeeper training suicide prevention initiative challenging the stigma surrounding suicide. Bluehats aims to normalise mental health by training workers how to recognise the signs of stress in themselves and in others. The life-saving skills learned in the Bluehats program are transferrable, with the capacity to help families and friends in the wider community.

In 2020, over 3000 Australians died by suicide, with men making up over 75% of suicide deaths.

When someone is thinking about suicide, there are often signs.

It’s important to understand that no single factor that contributes to suicide. In Australia, people who died by suicide in 2020 had on average three to four risk factors.

Protective factors are strengths, skills or resources that enhance resilience to overcome challenges and cope more effectively with stressors. Protective factors may be personal characteristics or attributes which reduce the likelihood of suicide.

Managing stress is a normal part of navigating life and can directly affect health and wellness. Stress is the reaction people may have when presented with demands and pressures which challenges their ability to cope.

Stressors are situations, conditions or events which may activate a stress response when we feel overwhelmed and unable to cope with demands. Stressors are a normal and occur regularly in everyday life.

Stress is experienced differently by each person. Knowing your signs of stress and how you respond in different situations can help you monitor your overall health and wellbeing. Do you know your signs of stress?
