Celebrating Women to Accelerate Progress

Posted on Mar 07, 2025

This International Women’s Day we're focusing on how we can Accelerate Progress by sharing stories of women in the industry.

Our members often tell us about the skills and perspectives women bring to the roles they fill.

Whether they are Plumbers, Carpenters, Project Coordinators or Designers they bring different life experiences and ideas to the roles they fill.

Sharing stories of women in the industry helps others see what a career in construction could look like for them.

Rachael made the move to Plumbing and hasn’t looked back

Rachael started her plumbing career as a mature aged apprentice at 27 and hasn’t looked back since.

At first she wasn’t sure how she’d go onsite but she’s glad she made the change “I didn’t know how I’d go onsite but It’s been the best decision I’ve made. It’s given me a great purpose”.

Rachael has felt welcomed and supported ever since she entered the industry.

Her advice to other women thinking about entering is “I’m 27 and I waited but if I had my time again, I wouldn’t have waited because it’s such a great industry. I would say just go for it”.

The pre-apprenticeship that changed Ange’s career path

Ange has always enjoyed working with her hands and decided to do a pre-apprenticeship 5 years ago thinking she would be a Sanitary Plumber or a Roofer.

Throughout the program she learned about the different career pathways in plumbing and found that Mechanical Plumbing was the best fit for her.

Ange’s advice to women thinking about a career in the construction industry is “Do you research and just apply because there are so many trades that you just don’t think about”.

“Do you research and just apply because there are so many trades that you just don’t think about”.

Much like Ange learned during her pre-apprenticeship within each trade there are a range of specialisations.

“It’s one of the funnest things and most rewarding jobs that you could ever get”.
