Releasing our 2024 Bluehats Roundtable report

Posted on July 17, 2024

Since its launch in 2018, we’ve been looking for ways to ensure the Bluehats program supports as many workers as possible.

In October 2023, we hosted the fourth Bluehats Roundtable to discuss the efficacy, growth and development of the Bluehats Suicide Prevention Program.

The roundtable brings together employers, unions, program sponsors, a researcher and a Bluehat to talk about the barriers preventing workers from reaching out for support.

We are pleased to now release the 2024 Roundtable report summarising the findings and key next steps to grow the program.

The report findings

Promotion

To increase the momentum of the Bluehats program participants wanted to see more promotion across digital channels as well as on-site. Participants also suggested that employers should share information about the importance of mental health on LinkedIn to further amplify the message.

Expanding the reach

Participants wanted to see Incolink and the Bluehats program on more sites. They talked about wanting to see Bluehats feature at safety breakfasts and hosting events for employers to further educate on the importance of mental health.

With more women entering the industry we must refer to the term ‘Workers Health’ instead of “Men’s Health.

Focus on inclusivity

A key theme that came up is how we refer to workers on-site ,Gerry Ayers the Health and Safety Unit Manager, CFMEU said “With more women entering the industry we must refer to the term ‘Workers Health’ instead of “Men’s Health”.

Participants understand the risk of suicide for men is higher but wanted to see the training updated to reflect the challenges women face, making the impact of men’s behaviour a priority.

We’d like to thank our partners CBUS Super and Worksafe Victoria for continuing to support the Bluehats program and everyone who came along to help shape its future.

This year we’ve split the report into two parts, the overview and the potential solutions generated on the day.
